The Lily Sanctuary is a non-profit 501(c)(3) parrot rescue whose sole purpose is to provide quality care and love for homeless and "special needs" parrots.  Why a parrot rescue?  Since 1993, when importation of exotic birds was banned in the U.S., domestic breeding has flourished.  Animals that once were rare and costly became more obtainable, and far too many birds were purchased as “impulse buys”.

Parrots are not only beautiful and fun, they are highly sensitive and intelligent creatures.  Many prospective owners don't realize that parrots are high-maintenance animals, or that their life expectancy can average 50-80 years, depending on the species.  The commitment is enormous, and a few years down the road more and more people are forced to give up their companion birds-- some by choice, some not.  The reasons for this are myriad: life changes such as illness, death, divorce, new partners, moves, financial problems, or simply the inability to continue providing the necessary care.  Under the best of circumstances, it is a heartbreaking decision that can cause a beloved avian companion to face a bleak and terrifying future.  Selling them is an option, one we think should be a last resort.  Placing them with a qualified, reputable rescue/sanctuary whose only interest is the bird’s welfare is the humane choice.  That’s what The Lily Sanctuary is all about.

                                    The Parrot Ten Commandments:

1.    My life is likely to last 30 or more years. Any separation from you will be painful to me. Remember that before you take me home.
2.    Give me time to understand what you want from me.
3.    Place your trust in me. It is crucial to my well-being.
4.    Don't be angry with me for long, don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your entertainment and your friends.
       I have only you.
5.    Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when it is speaking to me.
6.    Be aware that however you treat me, I'll never forget it.
7.    Remember before you hit me that I have a beak that could easily crush the bones of your hand, but I chose not to bite you.
8.    Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate, or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me.
Perhaps I'm not getting the right food or I've been in my cage too long
9.    Take care of me when I get old; you too will get old.
10.  Go with me on the last journey. Never say "I can't bear to watch it" or "Let it happen in my absence".
Everything is easier for me if you are there. Remember that I love you.
