Diet & Nutrition

Healthy FoodA majority of the residents at The Lily Sanctuary are large parrots. The need for a healthy diet is far more than a bowl of seeds. Their diet meets and/or exceeds all avian veterinary recommendations.

Besides a healthy blend of a special high-grade seed mixture and a variety of nuts, our birds receive premium complete-nutrition pellets and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables every day. They are offered special treats and we add nutritional supplements, as needed. Lots of clean, fresh water is important to keep them properly hydrated.

We have over 40 birds at the sanctuary. Your donations and sponsorship are welcome to help cover the cost of a highly nutritious diet. An average week includes:

* 40 lbs. of assorted fresh fruits and vegetables
* 15 lbs. of premium seed blends
* 10 lbs. of premium fruit pellets
* 10 lbs. of unsalted in-shell peanuts
* 5 lbs. of in-shell mixed nuts

Treats & Recipes

There are many nutritious foods and tasty treats that you can cook or bake for your birds. Avoid sugar, fat, salt and dairy. Remember, a treat is just that, offer on occasion. A favorite website where you can find safe and delicious recipes is the Cockatiel Cottage.

Safe Foods

Parrots should eat a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes, and grains. There are many resources that list recommended, safe foods that you should offer to your bird. We recommend organic, pesticide free, foods. If you do not know, wash them thoroughly.

Toxic Foods & Plants

Many human foods are highly toxic to parrots. Please learn what they are and do not share with your bird. Never give your bird alcoholic or caffinated beverages, chocolate, dairy products, or fatty foods. Certain fruits, vegetables and nuts are toxic or dangerous. Remove any seeds and pits.
