VOLUNTEER
OPPORTUNITIES AT THE LILY SANCTUARY
We are always interested in hearing from bird lovers who are considering
volunteer work in this field. We do not always have an immediate
opening, but they do come up and we’d be pleased to consider prospective
volunteers who are willing to make a commitment to the Sanctuary. We
prefer people with some experience and knowledge of exotic birds,
preferably large ones. Volunteers must be over 18 years of age and
willing to commit to a 3-4 hour shift every week or every other week. At
this time all volunteer shifts are afternoons, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
The Sanctuary is located in our home in the Fountain Valley area. The
indoor area is filled with approximately 40-50 cages, outdoors we have
about 20 large aviaries for daytime use. The atmosphere is loud, crowded
and chaotic. At the same time, it is congenial and upbeat because of our
exceptional volunteers and amazing birds. We need at least three
volunteers per day for the daily routine and maintenance, and it is
extremely important that all our volunteers are cooperative, kind,
experienced or willing to learn, and willing to work together with the
people and animals in a harmonious manner. Parrots are highly
intelligent and sensitive creatures and we endeavor to maintain a
positive and playful environment for them. If we feel that a stressful
or negative situation has developed because of a particular volunteer,
we reserve the right to discharge that person.
DAILY MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE: Collecting and changing water bowls in
outdoor aviaries, collecting and washing fresh food and water dishes,
wiping down cages and scraping poop from perches and cage skirts,
changing newspaper and plastic cage liners, replacing fresh water
dishes, distributing fresh seed, pellets and nuts, sweeping floors. Once
outdoor aviaries have fresh water, all birds are taken outside to
aviaries or patio stands (protected by hawk netting) for fresh air,
showers and playtime. Birds are transported by experienced Sanctuary
workers, but interested volunteers are encouraged to participate in as
much “hands-on” time as they wish once they have become familiar and
comfortable with proper parrot handling procedures.
OTHER CLEANING: On a weekly basis aviaries and patio area are power
washed, indoor cage grates are removed to an outdoor soaking tray to be
cleaned and replaced. Deep cage cleaning is needed on an ongoing basis,
and generally involves moving cages outside and removing toys, dry food
dishes, etc., and power washing/scrubbing, sanitizing. This is usually
scheduled ahead of time when we have a crew to work together on multiple
cages.
BIRD INTERACTION: Each bird has its own individual personality and some
are comfortable being handled while others are not. We have many safety
precautions built into our program and it is vital for the safety of the
people and the birds that these procedures be learned and implemented.
We presume everyone who is interested in volunteering has an
above-average interest in exotic birds, and we are delighted to offer
you the opportunity to learn about them and from them. It takes time to
build a comfort zone between new volunteers and the flock, but they are
social, playful creatures who love to interact with people. We encourage
as much interaction with the parrots as each volunteer desires.
EVENTS: We participate in several events each year, including the Pet
Expo at the O.C. Fairgrounds, Macy’s South Coast Plaza Passport event,
and numerous others. Some events allow us to raise money selling our own
items, including photos of our birds on t-shirts, mouse pads, etc. Others
donate funds to our organization for participating in promoting their
charity event. In all cases, the events always include birds, volunteers
and a lot of fun.
OTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: In addition to the daily maintenance
chores, we can use help with errands, vet visits, folding and
distributing brochures, fundraising, grantwriting, sorting and
organizing our ongoing mess of supplies and paperwork, fixing, building,
making toys, cooking specialty birdie foods, etc.
If volunteering at The Lily Sanctuary sounds like something you are
seriously interested in pursuing, please fill out a Volunteer
Application form so we can get to know you better. We thank you for your
interest in the care and welfare of our wonderful parrots.
